Its playful fame also comes from two stray cats who repeatedly attempted to “visit,” winning hearts worldwide.

  2. Senko-ji Temple, founded in 806, is one of Onomichi’s most iconic landmarks. Perched high on Mt. Senko-ji, it can be reached by a scenic cable car ride that reveals sweeping views of the city and the Seto Inland Sea. The temple’s vivid red main hall appears to cling to the mountainside, creating a striking contrast against the blue waters and sky. Within the grounds, visitors can explore centuries-old cultural treasures and follow walking paths lined with stone monuments. Seasonal beauty, from cherry blossoms in spring to vibrant foliage in autumn, makes it a beloved destination throughout the year.

About Onomichi

Onomichi is a hillside port on the Seto Inland Sea, with a temple walk, steep lanes, a literary path and the start of the Shimanami Kaido cycling route.

Onomichi squeezes between steep green hills and a narrow strait of the Seto Inland Sea in Hiroshima Prefecture, its houses and some two dozen temples stacked up the slope. The Temple Walk links them by stairways and lanes, and Senkoji Park, on the summit, has a ropeway and views over the roofs and ships. A Path of Literature, with poems carved into boulders, winds down the hillside, and Cat Alley is lined with cat-themed art.
