Highlights

In 1914 over 41,000 service men and women left from Albany bound for World War I. For many this would be the last time they saw home. Today at this very location stands the state-of-the-art award winning National Anzac Centre which uses multimedia, interactive technology and historical artifacts to create a deeply personal connection with the past, as well as pay tribute to those who served. Through traditional museum display and highly interactive multi-media content, visitors assume the identity of one of 32 actual service men or women, and follow their experience of the Great War: From recruitment, through training and embarkation, ship-board life on the convoys, the conflicts at Gallipoli, the Middle East, and the Western Front. Finally, for those lucky enough to survive, you will witness their return home and the difficulties they faced adjusting back into normal society.

  • 5Great expwrience, well set out.

A great experience to see and interact with people who actually went to war. Great idea to be able to follow a persons footsteps and their journey with the cards

  • 5Must see.

Excellent experience, very insitefull stories both of good and bad aspects of war and the after effects for some of the people as told honestly in the videos. The precinct is worth a visit without going to the ANZAC Centre. Great views. Allow a couple of hours.

  • 5Loved our Visit!

Enjoyed our visit to the National Anzac Centre in Albany. Was impressed with the self guide aspect of our time there. The technology was appreciated. Also found the inclusion of following the story of an individual man/woman’s war time experience interesting….it added another layer too our appreciation of the exhibits. My favourite exhibit was the One Hundred Stories room. Could have stayed in there all day! The stories were very poignant and made our experience even more real.

  • 5Must Visit - National Anzac Centre

A must-visit when you're in Albany. The museum is exceptionally well curated, with each visitor being assigned the journey of a real soldier at the start of the experience. As you progress through the exhibits, you follow their story and discover at the end whether they made it home or not. It's a powerful and deeply personal way to understand the human impact of war. One of the most moving parts of the museum is the room dedicated to all the fallen soldiers. The space features a large open window overlooking the harbour, creating a peaceful place for reflection where families and visitors can pay their respects. The combination of thoughtful storytelling, interactive displays, and stunning location makes the National ANZAC Centre an unforgettable experience.

About Albany

Albany is a harbour city on Western Australia's south coast, with granite headlands, wild surf, a whaling history and the Anzac story of 1914.

Albany stands on King George Sound on Western Australia's south coast, where a military outpost was founded in 1826, three years before Perth, making it the oldest European settlement in the state. Old stone buildings fill the town centre. In 1914 the first troop convoys of the Australian and New Zealand armies sailed from the sound for the First World War, and the National Anzac Centre in Albany Heritage Park tells the story.

Top-ranked sights in Albany: National Anzac Centre, Albany's Historic Whaling Station, The Gap and Natural Bridge.
