Itinerary
A guide will accompany you into the tunnel and provide commentary. Plastic shoe covers will also be distributed free of charge to anyone who needs them to keep their shoes dry. Kiyotsu Gorge—one of Japan’s Three Great Gorges—offers a magnificent, natural spectacle created by the earth itself. Particularly famous is the sight of the water pooled on the floor, which acts like a mirror, beautifully reflecting the gorge’s scenery. This breathtaking view, unique to Kiyotsu Gorge, blends the grandeur of nature itself with a space reminiscent of modern art. You’ll discover completely different charms depending on the season: fresh greenery in spring, deep green in summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and a fantastical world blanketed in snow in winter. “Bijin-bayashi”: Where You Can Experience the Beauty of the Four Seasons In this approximately 3-hectare forest, rows of beech trees—all of nearly the same thickness—create a striking sight that draws visitors into a quiet and soothing forest world. Especially during the season of fresh greenery, soft green leaves sprout all at once, and sunlight filtering through the trees adds color to the forest. In summer, visitors are enveloped in cool greenery; in autumn, leaves tinged with yellow and brown paint the forest; and in winter, you can witness the magical sight of beech trunks rising from deep snow. “Hoshitoge Terraced Rice Fields”: A Stunning Landscape Born from Life in a Snowy Region Located in Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture, the “Hoshitoge Terraced Rice Fields” offer a beautiful, traditional Japanese landscape featuring rice paddies of various sizes strung along a mountainside. From the spring snowmelt to the fall harvest, the scenery changes with the seasons, captivating visitors year-round. There is a donation box at this site to support maintenance and upkeep. “Shibui” is a charming café run by architect Karl Benks, who moved to Matsudai in Tokamachi City several decades ago. The café is housed in a traditional old Japanese home, and its unique appeal lies in the blend of traditional snow country architecture with German sensibilities. While admiring the old pillars and beams, visitors can leisurely enjoy the café’s menu, which includes quiche, desserts, and coffee. It’s a place where the history of the snow country and a different culture come together, offering an experience you can only find here.
You can see exhibits featuring flame-patterned pottery from the Jomon period, which dates back about 5,000 years, as well as displays on life in snowy regions and the culture of textiles. Photo credit Tokamachi City MuseumPhoto
