Itinerary
Ise Jingu Naiku, the Inner Shrine dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami, is the most sacred Shinto site in Japan. Stroll through ancient cedar forests and across the Uji Bridge over the clear Isuzu River to the main sanctuary.
Ise Jingu Geku, the Outer Shrine dedicated to Toyouke Omikami, the deity of agriculture, harvest and food. Its tranquil forested grounds and simple thatched-roof architecture embody the spirit of Shinto.
Oharaimachi is a picturesque approach street to the Inner Shrine, lined with Edo-period wooden merchant houses now home to shops, cafes and local specialties such as Ise udon and Akafuku mochi.
Okage Yokocho is a lively recreated Edo- and Meiji-era district in the middle of Oharaimachi, filled with food stalls, craft shops and traditional snacks that capture the atmosphere of old Ise.
Futami Okitama Shrine is a seaside shrine famous for Meoto Iwa, the Wedded Rocks: two sacred rocks joined by a thick shimenawa rope that symbolize the union of husband and wife and the gods.
Sarutahiko Shrine is dedicated to Sarutahiko Okami, the Shinto deity of guidance and good fortune. Travelers visit to pray for safe journeys, new beginnings and success in their endeavors.
Tsukiyomi no Miya is an auxiliary shrine of the Inner Shrine, set in a quiet grove and dedicated to Tsukuyomi, the moon deity and sibling of the sun goddess Amaterasu.
Kongoshoji is an ancient temple on Mount Asama, traditionally regarded as the guardian temple of Ise Jingu. It offers sweeping panoramic views over Ise Bay and the surrounding countryside.
