  • 4Crowded time in Miyajima and Hiroshima

We had a very busy day visiting Miyajima Island and the Hiroshima Peace Park and Museum. It was probably a little bit too much to do in a 7 hour tour, but our guide Joe did an excellent job arranging timings and the details of the tour. It was very crowded at Miyajima Island with lots of tourists and school groups, so it was a little frustrating moving around the shrine and biding the Torii gate - which was a little underwhelming. We moved seamlessly back to Hiroshima by ferry and bus, and even stopped at a fabulous local pottery shop to make a purchase. We enjoyed the Peace Park more, even though it was a sobering experience. Still lots of school groups, who crowded the museum, and prevented careful and slow progress. So we felt a little rushed. Joe did his best, and of no fault of his own, the crowds and experience prevented this tour from being a 5 star tour. The Peace Park was definitely worth the time.

  • 5Respectful guide to Hiroshima’s history and beauty

Joe was a respectful and capable guide in Hiroshima. He handled the history and the scale of the devastation with care, especially around the Peace Memorial, without rushing or dramatizing it. At the same time he showed how calm and beautiful the city is today; green, livable, and worth seeing beyond the memorial sites. We appreciated both sides of the day.

About Hiroshima

Hiroshima, on Japan's Seto Inland Sea, is a rebuilt river city whose Peace Memorial Park and museum recall the atomic bombing of 1945.

Hiroshima spreads across the delta of the Ōta River, whose channels, bridges and trams give the city an open feel. The atomic bomb of 6 August 1945 destroyed most of it. The Peace Memorial Park beside the river holds the Atomic Bomb Dome, a ruined building left standing and listed by UNESCO, the Peace Memorial Museum and the Children's Peace Monument.
