  • 5Roman history and civilization

This was an informative and even entertaining tour led by a knowledgeable and professional guide, Anna. I learned a lot about Pompei's history in the context of the outstandingly well developed Roman civilization.

  • 4Alfredo was a brilliant...

Alfredo was a brilliant tour guide; he had worked on the excavation so you could tell he was passionate and knew what he was talking about! I definitely wouldn’t do this without a tour guide next time. 2 hours didn’t seem long enough as it was so extensive! I only left a star out as were told the night before that we could change to an earlier tour time and upon arrival we were told this would not be possible, so we had to wait around before our original time; if we knew we couldn’t change it, we wouldn’t have turned up so early!

  • 5Worthwhile.... absolutely!

Pompei...... what an experience.... words are difficult to find because you're talking about a real town, real people and their lives and most awful deaths.... I definitely think it was absolutely necessary to have an archaeologist explain what the experts believe happened but also to tell us about the lives of the people of Pompei as it has been discovered 🤔. Alessandro was our English speaking archaeologist she came across as very knowledgeable but not at all dismissive of any ideas or forward by members of the group. We booked a 2 hour English speaking tour with a group of no more than 20 people (so yes we were issued with those ear pieces, but they were easy to wear and meant you could linger a little at any point and simply catch up with the walk). The tour organisers all appeared to be student archaeologists, very much in at the deep end, with having to greet, talk to and collate all of the assembled people waiting to go on their tour. [There were an awful lot of people from all nations, all waiting for their particular spoken language tour. I point this out because it did make it all seem very disorganised, but in fairness I'm not sure what better way it could've been done..... just attend the Scavi meeting point and wait patiently and please listen........ beware the tour will only wait 5 minutes past your book time if you are later, you will miss it!!] The booked tour includes your entrance ticket as well as the fee for the qualified archaeologist, when you consider this honestly, it is really good value. Pompei was a large town, the scale of which it is difficult to conceive until you have visited. I belive it has received quite a lot of coverage on TV in the last few years, that makes it something that many, many people have added to their "to do" list..... it was very busy, also very hot when we went about 28°. Because it is stone, brick and ash it all retains the heat of the sun..... so please go prepared! I think it's also worth pointing out this is a walking tour on very difficult ground , which is very uneven with steps up and down as you traverse the building remains and the streets...... but gosh it was worth it... hearing about their lives, why the Pompeians lived and died there... what has been discovered and is still being discovered..... and what may never be discovered..... My husband and I found the whole thing terribly interesting (in actual truth, he was surprised at how interesting he found it, he told me afterwards)..... I personally also found some areas quite saddening, with the remains of people's lives and plaster casts of their bodies in glass cases being photographed....... but that is just me?! Anyway, is the paid archaeologist tour worth it? Undoubtedly yes, will you see everything, No...... if you have time, stay in the Scavi for as long as you can and walk around on your own after the tour..... beware! This is the remains of a Pompeian town/city it is not a theme park, there no supplied benches or cafes etc...... though there is the "White villa" a building that offers toilets and some refreshments but it was never meant to cater for the numbers that visit...... wear comfortable shoes, light clothing, take water and snacks but please do NOT drop any litter.

About Pompeii

Pompeii is a Roman town near Naples frozen in ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, with streets, villas and frescoes preserved beneath the volcano.

Pompeii was a thriving Roman town when Vesuvius buried it under ash and pumice in AD 79. Excavation, begun in the eighteenth century, has uncovered paved streets with stepping stones, shops, bakeries, bathhouses and the forum. The amphitheatre, among the oldest Roman ones to survive, and the grand House of the Faun show the range of life, and plaster casts of the dead record the final moments of some residents.
