Highlights

Our Durango Jeep tour travels up La Plata Canyon, a rugged ravine nestled in an alpine paradise. Here in this glacially sculpted landscape, you’ll find waterfalls cascading into the canyon, hallways of glimmering aspens, countless wildflowers, wildlife scurrying between the meadows, and panoramic views of Colorado's most beautiful Rocky Mountains. Like we said, paradise! Our fun-loving and experienced guides are Durango locals, who know this canyon's rich history and ecology like nobody else. While other outfitters tend to let the scenery do all the work for them, our guides give you a wealth of insight about what makes this area incredibly special. They're also talented drivers who will get you up this rutted trail without a hitch. Most people don't want to take their own vehicles up this old mining route, and our open-air Jeeps are customized for a smoother ride— although it will still be bumpy about half way through. It's all a part of the fun!

Itinerary

  1. Meet us at our Durango Office in the morning or afternoon for a 4-hour excursion up the ruggedly beautiful wilderness of La Plata Canyon, just 20 minutes from town. The trail starts off smooth and slowly transitions into a rubbled road about half up the canyon. Get ready to rock around and get to know the person next to you! As we make our way up the mountain, we'll stop to check out some waterfalls, meadows, and old remnants from Colorado's wild mining era. On the way up, keep your eyes peeled for deer, marmot, fox, birds of prey— and if you’re lucky, a moose or bear! Once we've reached the top of the canyon, we'll take some time to enjoy a spectacular view of the San Juan Mountains, Colorado's most beloved Rockies! From late June to early August, this is the perfect off-roading trail for wildflowers. In late September to early October, the large aspen groves make for amazing fall colors

  • 5Memorable tour with our guide Tim

We took the Jeep tour of La Plata Canyon with Tim as our guide. We could Not have expected or had a better experience. Tim was friendly, knowledgeable, and genuine. his anecdotes, knowledge of the region, its history and geology, served to enhance the tour. He selected a few short hikes along the way where he was helpful with footholds and perfect picture locations. Tim even selected perfect spots where he took pictures of my wife and me. Our tour will be a lasting memory of our Southwest trip and was reasonably priced.

Admission fee was reasonable. The length of trip was perfect. Our guide Taj (sp) had a great sense of humor and was very accommodating. Hats off to him he made the tour.

  • 5A fun scenic jeep experience

We had a wonderful jeep ride with Tim as our guide. We went deep into the backcountry and saw sights we’d have never seen on our own. Our travel companions became friends. Tim was friendly, courteous, knowledgeable and a lot of fun. It was several hours well spent!

  • 5Awesome experience!

This Jeep excursion was great! Our tour guide, Jarrod, was incredibly knowledgeable about the region and the rich mining history of the mountains. He shared so many interesting facts! I also liked that he was willing to spend time with us at some of the stops to let us explore, ask questions, take pictures or just sit and take in the astounding views. We never felt rushed. The tour does go way up into the mountains, to 11,000 feet, and gets pretty rough due to the rock & natural debris trails, so you need to be capable of holding on and handling the very bumpy ride. However, if thats not an issue for you, it was absolutely worth it for the unbelievable views we got when we reached our destination!!! It was breathtaking-nothing we've seen before. Jarrod knows his vehicle, the mountains and his history extremely well. We consider ourselves lucky he was our host for the afternoon. 10 thumbs up!! PS: Wear sturdy, closed toed shoes or boots, bring small snacks. Your guide will have water. Suggest not eating prior to your tour!

  • 3Interesting history.

Our guide Myles was excellent. His oratory and information all through the day was interesting. He offered water and snacks. We met new people and enjoyed their company. We travel the world and have to say until we reached the last step at the top of the canyon the sires were not impressive. This is only my opinion. While the description mentioned a bumpy ride, it was much more than I anticipated. Thankfully seat belts kept us connected to the earth. Very nice people, great information about the mining which went on, just understand the ride up and down is not for anyone with neck or back problems. The weather was beautiful. Myles rolled the top tarp up so the sides were open. I wish the cover provided views to the front of the vehicle, but I don’t believe it could. If you’re well informed about the rugged drive up and down the canyon, you might find the journey well worth your time. This is a good company so understand I am not downing the experience for others, this is just an honest, personal assessment. The view at the top was beautiful.

About Durango

Durango is a Wild West railroad town in south-west Colorado, on the Animas River, known for its steam train, the San Juan Mountains and nearby Mesa Verde.

Durango was founded in 1880 as a railroad town for the silver mines of the San Juan Mountains, and its Main Avenue still has Victorian brick buildings, saloons and hotels from that time. A coal-fired narrow-gauge steam train, running since 1882, chugs up the Animas River canyon to the mining town of Silverton, through scenery of high peaks and gorges.
