Piazza Grande, a sloping square lined with palaces, loggias and the apse of a Romanesque church, hosts a jousting tournament, the Giostra del Saracino, held in June and September. Petrarch was born here in 1304, and so was the painter and writer Giorgio Vasari, in 1511. Scenes of the film Life Is Beautiful were shot in the old town.
