Itinerary

  1. The Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls is one of Rome's four major papal basilicas and a stunning masterpiece of early Christian architecture. Founded in the 4th century over the burial site of the Apostle Paul, this monumental church awes visitors with its gleaming mosaic facade and vast, column-lined nave. Unlike the bustling center of Rome, this basilica offers a serene, majestic atmosphere, complete with a peaceful 13th-century cloister and a breathtaking golden apse that reflects centuries of spiritual history.

    30 min

  2. The Pyramid of Cestius is one of Rome’s most unexpected architectural treasures, standing as a striking monument to the city’s ancient fascination with all things Egyptian. Built around 18 BC as a tomb for the wealthy Roman magistrate Gaius Cestius, this perfectly preserved, 118-foot-tall white marble pyramid is seamlessly integrated into the later Aurelian Walls. Rising above the bustling Ostiense neighborhood, it provides a unique and photogenic glimpse into the cosmopolitan nature of the ancient Roman Empire.

    40 min

  4. The Circus Maximus was ancient Rome's premier stadium for chariot racing and mass entertainment. Spanning a massive valley between the Aventine and Palatine hills, this immense arena could accommodate over 150,000 spectators, making it the largest stadium in the Roman Empire. While the thundering chariots and roaring crowds are long gone, standing by this vast green expanse offers a spectacular view of the sprawling ruins of the Imperial Palaces towering above. It remains an evocative stop that perfectly reveals the sheer scale of public life and entertainment in antiquity.

    5 min

  5. The Forum Boarium was ancient Rome’s bustling cattle market, located in a scenic area near the banks of the Tiber River. As one of the oldest commercial hubs in the city, this historic square is home to two of the most extraordinarily preserved temples from the Roman Republic era. You can admire the elegant circular Temple of Hercules Victor, constructed entirely of white marble, and the rectangular Temple of Portunus, dedicated to the ancient god of keys and ports. It is a peaceful, historically dense stop that showcases classical architecture long before the rise of the great Roman emperors.

  6. The Theater of Marcellus is a fascinating showcase of Roman history, often mistaken for a smaller version of the Colosseum. Completed by Emperor Augustus in 13 BC and named after his favorite nephew, this grand open-air theater once welcomed thousands of spectators for dramatic performances. Its most striking feature today is the unique blend of architectural eras, with Renaissance palace apartments built directly on top of the ancient stone arches. It serves as a stunning, photogenic testament to how the city continuously recycled its monumental past into living history.

  7. Piazza del Campidoglio is one of Rome’s most elegant and architecturally harmonious squares, masterfully designed by the legendary Michelangelo. Perched atop the historic Capitoline Hill, this grand public space features a striking geometric, star-shaped pavement pattern and is flanked by majestic palaces that now house the famed Capitoline Museums. In the center stands the iconic equestrian statue of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. A short walk to the rear edge of the square rewards you with an unforgettable panoramic view overlooking the sprawling ancient ruins of the Roman Forum below.

    15 min

  8. Piazza Venezia serves as the bustling geographic heart of Rome, where the city’s major avenues intersect in a grand display of urban energy. The square is entirely dominated by the majestic Altare della Patria, the gleaming white marble monument dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of a unified Italy. Flanking the piazza is the historic Palazzo Venezia, a grand Renaissance palace famous for its central balcony that played a pivotal role in 20th-century history. With its imposing architecture and lively atmosphere, it acts as a stunning gateway connecting the ancient ruins of the Roman Forum to the vibrant streets of the modern city.

  9. The Pantheon is the best-preserved monument of the ancient world and a true architectural marvel of the Roman Empire. Rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian in the second century, this former pagan temple turned Christian basilica is famous for its breathtaking portico of massive granite columns and its soaring dome. Inside, the magnificent concrete dome features a central oculus, an open eye to the sky that bathes the ancient marble floor in dramatic natural sunlight. Serving as the final resting place for the Renaissance master Raphael and Italian kings, it remains one of the most awe-inspiring and timeless spaces in human history.

  10. Piazza Navona is one of Rome's most vibrant and beautiful public spaces, celebrated as a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. Built on the foundations of the ancient 1st-century Stadium of Domitian, the square still retains its elegant, elongated stadium shape. The piazza is dominated by three spectacular fountains, most notably Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers, which sits dramatically in front of the striking church of Sant'Agnese in Agone. Filled with street artists, lively cafes, and grand palaces, it is the perfect spot to experience the joyful, theatrical atmosphere of Roman open-air life.

    20 min

  11. Piazza di Spagna is one of Rome’s most famous and glamorous squares, renowned worldwide for the iconic Spanish Steps that sweep elegantly up to the Trinità dei Monti church. At the base of the staircase sits the Fontana della Barcaccia, a beautiful Baroque fountain in the shape of a sinking boat, masterfully sculpted by Pietro Bernini and his legendary son, Gian Lorenzo. Surrounded by historic tearooms, high-end fashion boutiques, and vibrant flower displays, this bustling square perfectly captures the romance and style of the city, making it a favorite gathering place for visitors and locals alike.

    20 min

  12. The Trevi Fountain is the largest and most famous Baroque fountain in the world, standing as a breathtaking triumph of sculpture, architecture, and water. Tucked away intimately within a small square, this grand masterpiece features the sea god Oceanus taming the waters atop a chariot pulled by seahorses and Tritons, all framed by a majestic palace facade. It is renowned worldwide for the timeless tradition of tossing a coin over your left shoulder with your right hand, a gesture that legend promises will guarantee your eventual return to the Eternal City. Hearing the roaring water before you even turn the corner creates an unforgettable, theatrical experience that marks an essential highlight of any Roman adventure.

About Lake Bracciano

Lake Bracciano is a round volcanic crater lake north-west of Rome, with clear water for swimming and sailing and medieval towns on its shores.

Lake Bracciano fills an ancient volcanic crater about thirty kilometres north-west of Rome, a rounded lake with low wooded hills around it. It has long been a drinking-water reserve for Rome, so motor boats are banned and the water stays unusually clear. Small beaches line parts of the shore, and sailing, swimming and windsurfing are favourite pastimes in summer.
