Lake Bracciano fills an ancient volcanic crater about thirty kilometres north-west of Rome, a rounded lake with low wooded hills around it. It has long been a drinking-water reserve for Rome, so motor boats are banned and the water stays unusually clear. Small beaches line parts of the shore, and sailing, swimming and windsurfing are favourite pastimes in summer.
Three towns give the lake its character. Bracciano has the Orsini-Odescalchi castle, a fifteenth-century fortress with frescoed halls on a rocky hill above the water. Anguillara Sabazia is an old fishing borough set on a promontory, and Trevignano Romano climbs a hillside with views along the shore. Cerveteri's Etruscan tombs lie about twenty kilometres to the south-west, and Rome is an hour away by train or road.
Fish from the lake, such as whitefish and eel, appear fried or grilled in lakeside restaurants, along with fresh pasta, local olive oil and the cured meats of Lazio. Summer is for swimming and sailing, while spring and early autumn are calm and green and good for walks around the shore. Winters are cool and sometimes misty, and the lakeside towns are quiet.
