4Truly an Amazing Cave Dive
This tour was the highlight of our trip to Bonito. The cave itself is worth the trip, and getting lowered down into it absolutely amazing. However, SCUBA diving around the limestone cone formations and seeing the 2000 year old anteater skeleton was a one-of-a-kind experience that I would highly recommend to anyone willing to try it. However, there are a few negative points that do need to be mentioned: 1. The cost is extremely expensive, almost 1000 Reis for two people. We also SCUBA dived in the Lagoa Misteriosa, and it was MUCH cheaper. Logistically these two experiences were very similar. The main differences were that the Abismo Anhumasand also included a short raft tour on the lake and access required being lowered and raised on a 72m cable system. However, I see no justification for the Abismo Anhumas dive experience being so exorbitant. I can only assume it's because there is higher demand there. 2. I understand that Bonito is mainly visited by Brazilians, but it is still a tourist destination and sometimes international tourists want to visit. Unfortunately, almost no tour guides I met spoke English, and I don't speak Portuguese. This was the problem on the boat tour mentioned above. I was one of three people who didn't understand Portuguese, so my wife was willing translate what Eduardo the guide said for all of us. However, he never stopped speaking to allow her to do that, even when she asked him. He just ignored us and spoke to the Brazilians there, so we got very little from that part of the experience. 3. The SCUBA dive was the best part of the experience by far, and our dive guide was really good. He also took a bunch of great photos of us. Later we went to office to see them. However, here again the price was unreasonably expensive and we ended up not buying any. Having said all that, the staff overall where very friendly, and we did meet J who actually spoke some English. Unfortunately, he wasn't the guide on our boat for some reason. However, the cave dive was so awesome, that is was still absolutely worth it.
5100% recommend!
Excellent experience. Worth the expense. Iago and Ronnie and the whole team were excellent and made being in the cave 100% better.
5Diving Abismo Anhumas
Abismo Anhumas is a limestone cave which is taken up by a very deep lake in which I made a wonderful dive with Bonito SCUBA. To access this dive site I had to be winched 72 metres from the Earth’s surface on a seat attached to a crane from the cave’s opening down through the tunnel which has rocky sides. Poisonous spiders can be found on the rocky sides so we were advised to keep hands in close to our bodies but it all added to the excitement of the event. The guidance I received was excellent and they made great effort to equip me with a wetsuit which fitted me perfectly. This was especially good because the water is so cold. At first I couldn’t believe how cold it was but the wetsuit soon warmed me up. We were given torches which were necessary to see in the inky- blackness and the main thing to see are the limestone pillars which rise from the depths. We only went to 18 metres but the lake goes much deeper than that. The guide took down a camera to shoot some pictures for us so I have some souvenirs. For me the highlight was seeing the skeleton of an unfortunate giant anteater which fell through the cave’s opening and drowned in the lake. The guide photographed me shining my light on it. After the dive I took a general tour of the lake on a boat which gave me the chance to take pictures on my phone. This is great but if you do it the danger is dropping your phone in the lake. If you do that the lake is so deep you will never get it back!

About Bonito
Bonito is a small town in Mato Grosso do Sul, in south-western Brazil, known for spring-fed rivers of great clarity, caves and snorkelling.
Bonito lies in the Serra da Bodoquena, a limestone upland in Mato Grosso do Sul in south-western Brazil, where springs feed rivers of unusual clarity. The town is small, a base for the ranches and nature reserves around it. Floating or snorkelling down the Rio da Prata and the Rio Sucuri among shoals of fish is the signature outing, and the Gruta do Lago Azul, a deep cave holding a lake of intense blue water, is the best-known single sight.
