Highlights

The magnificent landscape of the Val d'Orcia, among the Tuscan hills, was included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 2004. The Val d'Orcia, a combination of art and landscape, geographical space and ecosystem, is the expression of wonderful natural features but it is also the result and the testimony of the people who lived there. According to UNESCO this valley is an exceptional example of how the natural landscape was redesigned in the Renaissance and reflects the ideals of "good governance" (14th and 15th centuries) typical of the Italian city-state, whose splendid places were celebrated by the painters of the Sienese School, which flourished between the 13th and 15th centuries. The images of the Val d'Orcia and in particular the reproductions of its landscapes, in which people are depicted living in harmony with nature, have thus become icons of the Renaissance era.

Itinerary

  1. It was in this Tuscan town that Renaissance town-planning concepts were first put into practice after Pope Pius II decided, in 1459, to transform the look of his birthplace. He chose the architect Bernardo Rossellino, who applied the principles of his mentor, Leon Battista Alberti. This new vision of urban space was realized in the superb square known as Piazza Pio II and the buildings around it: the Piccolomini Palace, the Borgia Palace and the cathedral with its pure Renaissance exterior and an interior in the late Gothic style of south German churches.

  2. Perched on the top of a hill, south of Tuscany and not far from Siena, Montepulciano is a medieval town of rare beauty that certainly deserves to be visited! A unique village with elegant Renaissance palaces, ancient churches, splendid squares and small hidden corners. Moreover, from Montepulciano you can enjoy a fabulous and endless panorama of the Val d'Orcia and the Val di Chiana.

About Rome

Rome layers nearly three thousand years of history into one walkable city, from the Colosseum and Forum to Baroque piazzas and Vatican art.

Ancient Rome is still in plain sight. The Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill sit together at the city's heart, the Pantheon still stands with its open oculus, and fragments of temples and aqueducts turn up between apartment blocks. Across the Tiber, Vatican City holds St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums and Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling.

Top-ranked sights in Rome: Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel.
