Itinerary
Known as "the best castle on the Nankaido (road)," is a symbol of Kochi City. Currently, there are only 12 castles from the pre-Edo period in Japan, but Kochi Castle is one of the most precious castles. The current main tower was rebuilt in August 1747. The greatest feature of Kochi Castle is that the cohesive entirely of the main building group, with the Tenshu, Goten, and Corridor Bridge, all being completely present along with the stone wall and so on. The gazebo on the top floor of the castle tower overlooks Kochi city.
Large hall with food stalls from around 40 various restaurants, plus souvenir shops and other shops. Perhaps you will enjoy some of the famous “Katsuo Tataki,” which is seared bonito fish. It is recommended that you put salt and sliced garlic on it before tasting. Do enjoy the local foods unique to Kochi.
The Makino Botanical Garden, located at the summit of Godaiyama, Kochi, was opened in 1958 to honor the achievements of Dr. Tomitaro Makino, the "father of Japanese plant taxonomy" from Kochi Prefecture. About 3,000 hectares, including wild plants related to the doctor, color the four seasons in the approximately 6 hectares of the garden, making it one of Japan's leading integrated botanical gardens where you can feel the joy of meeting plants in nature.
Prospered greatly due to the devotion of the Tosa lord, and monk disciples gathered, becoming the center of Tosa culture as a study temple. Many works of great importance have come out of this place, and there is a “secret” Buddha that is only shown to the public once every 50 years. Further, the five-storied pagoda built in the precinct is the only one in Kochi Prefecture, and the tower contains stupas solicited from Bodh Gaya, India.

5Not Even the Weather Could Put a Damper on This Essential Kochi Tour
We added the "Tour of Kochi" as the town was a stop on a recent cruise and could not be more satisfied with the excursion and especially our guide, Kimy. Arriving on a rainy day, we expected it might be slow going because of the weather but Kimy tailored each site/area accordingly, always aware of the time and our connection that would take us to the next location. The sites were indeed representative of the history and beauty of Japan and this locality in particular, as well as giving us an enhanced knowledge of the culture. For that alone the tour is worth the price, but I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge how much Kimy added to the total experience. Setting aside her familiarity and education of the sites, I had several observations on just how professional she was in her preparation as well. For example, some guides impart readied information just verbally, others through 8 x 10 notebooks, etc. She carted around what looked to be a large (at least 16" x 24") spiral bound folder with numerous charts and details to enhance her tour. I mentioned it was raining so we took our time through some more uncertain areas so as not to slip, while she slowed the pace accordingly (all the while testing safety in upcoming stepping places herself while looking back to ensure we were all right), but make no mistake that she is quite capable of picking up the pace and walking at any speed suitable to your particular tour. She had great locations in mind for the best photo shots (also taking pictures herself which she later shared) and altered the order of tour locations as she reasoned - correctly - that since the cruise ship was in town, a certain area was bound to be mobbed by the cruise tour groups, so when we went at a later time only locals were around. She always asked us if the upcoming plan was in accordance to our wishes, paused to answer questions from other tourists on a bus that were "trying to go it alone" (asking the driver to help them on their course as well) and, never missing a detail, even stopping later to assist another elderly man who was appeared to be overcome by the heat. Really just too many things to praise, but if visiting Kochi I highly recommend this tour and if you happen to be shown around by Kimy then you couldn't ask for a better guide or a better person.
5Great time in Kagoshima!
Our tour of Kagoshima was perfect! Our guide Mio was a true gem. She was very knowledgeable, professional, courteous, and a pleasure to be around. We arrived via cruise ship and we’re not sure when we would be able to get to the meeting point but she was in constant contact with us so we did not have to worry about missing her. We hope to be able to come visit again in the future and would definitely enjoy having Mio as our guide again. Five stars all the way!
5Kimy was an AWESOME personal tour guide
Kimy was an incredible personal guide for our day in Kochi. She met us off our cruise boat and took us around to several sites. She shared so much knowledge and was so prepared with a flip-chart with pictures to explain things. She was kind and friendly. We seriously couldn't have done it without her. She navigated the public transportation for us and then was extremely helpful in ordering food (we don't speak Japanese). She made a special trip to a 7-11 so my husband could try a egg salad sandwich. The best thing was she was our personal photographer all day. She took so many awesome pictures of us and then shared them in a file for us. We have always had a good experience booking with Viator.
5Great time
Best day of our trip to Japan! Demi designed a wonderful set of experiences for us to explore Kochi for the day. She even found the perfect restaurant for us when we shared that fish wasn't our favorite. Im so glad we spent the day with a private tour rather than a bus tour.
5Kochi must hired guide Demi
We arrived at Kochi via the cruise ship and met with Hidemi Hamada (Demi) at the Harimayabashi bus terminal at 9am. Demi was waiting for us and was holding a sign with our names on it. Demi spoke excellent English. She was warm and friendly and immediately put us at ease. We took the local bus visiting Kochi castle, Kochi park and the Makino Bontanical garden in the morning. We had lunch at a local market. After lunch, Demi brought us to the Chikurin-ji Temple. We had a great time in Kochi with lots of walking and climbing stairs. Demi shared her excellent knowledge in all the stops. She was very organized and helped us took many lovely pictures. She even shared some of her parents’ bakery shop pastries with us. Thank you Demi for such a wonderful day.
4A Kochi day trip
Peach was fun and friendly. She took us to places that were exciting to see, but not all of them were overpriced or overcrowded which was nice. It was a great day.

About Kochi
Kochi, on the Pacific coast of Shikoku, is a castle town known for seared bonito, a long Sunday market and its ties to the hero Sakamoto Ryoma.
Kochi stands on the southern coast of Shikoku, facing the Pacific, with mountains rising immediately behind. Kochi Castle, in the middle of the city, keeps its original wooden keep from the 18th century, one of the few left in Japan, and from the top there are views over the rooftops. Sakamoto Ryoma, a samurai who helped bring down the shogunate in the 1860s, was born here, and his statue looks out over the ocean at Katsurahama beach.
