  • 3Incredible Maze, unfortunately ruined by others' selfishness.

The Doloris Anoma maze might be one of the most unique things I have ever experienced. I won't give away what, exactly, it entails, as that is part of the magic. Suffice to say, you will experience a huge array of emotions in the space of just a couple short hours. It has so much potential to be something so, so great. The maze excellently evoked feelings of fear, wonder, isolation, and even nostalgia for me. However, the experience was wholly ruined by the selfishness of other people. Before you go in, you are made to watch a short and excellently-made video explaining the rules of the visit - one of which is that the maze is meant to be experienced alone, so to please refrain from talking inside the maze. Unfortunately, during my visit, other guests were constantly chatting with each other at full volume, shouting to each other from room to room, and even loudly announcing to each other when they had found hidden passageways etc. The evokation of liminal space and isolation is, in my opinion, one of the maze's main draws, so it completely rips you from your immersion - and thus ability to experience the maze as it is intended - when people are constantly loudly chatting. It really was a huge shame, as the moments of quiet that I did get evoked such incredible senses of wonder and emotion from me. I have heard that in the Tilburg maze, silence is enforced much more strictly by the staff, and I think this really should be the case in the Utrecht maze. If other patrons are constantly being disruptive, I think it would be reasonable to ask them to leave for the sake of other people in the maze, given that the whole point of the art piece is the silent, solo experience (as evidenced by the fact that they seperate you at the beginning of the maze from anyone you've come with as a group - you're made to enter through seperate doorways). I think if it weren't for the loudness issue, the ticket price would be WELL worth the money. However, when you can't get the full experience out of the maze, it becomes quite pricey because you feel like you haven't been able to get the whole intended experience. All in all, this maze is best for people who have a childlike sense of wonder, adventurers, outdoorsy types, and perhaps people who aren't easily irked by the inconsiderateness of others. (And no, unfortunately you can't get away with wearing earplugs as sound effects are a large part of the experience). Maze as it is now: 6/10 Maze if they enforce the no-talking policy: 12/10.

  • 5Felt I was in a Dali painting

Super nice experience, where the participants are transported to a different reality. I would love to experience it again for the first time.

  • 1Not recommend this as a couple date. 1/5

Fun experience but they really isolate you. Me and my girlfriend didn't see eachother all the maze and thus was a birthday gift for her to do together. Would never do this again, never recommend this to anybody who wants to do something. Together. I even asked in the beginning if we could do it together and she said no. While in the maze I saw everyone else being together. Other then that, my girlfriend found the exit so quickly and she waited for me for 40 minutes. She only was in for 10 minutes and couldn't go back in. Ridiculous 1/5

  • 1Unpleasant, expensive and scary

I am a slim, fit and healthy woman but found the maze physically challenging and at times quite frightening. Anyone with any restrictions would find it very difficult to get round. I felt there was not enough information given either on the website or at the venue. Think twice before you book.

  • 1Cheap and claustrophobic haunted house

What gets me is the misleading advertising and the fact the company keeps denying on the review responses that the place is actually an attempt to a haunted house. It was psychedelic at times, but more like a very bad trip... Dark everywhere, most of the time you're just crawling in tight spaces, once you arrive in a small room it was just grim noises, creepy figures (or non sense and disconnected, nothing really to admire or interact to). Way too little emergency buttons. In fact some places were very dangerous and you could fall from a few meters high with no safety bars or net whatsoever. There are so many ways to stimulate people's senses other than scary music, creepy and dark vibe, tiniest spaces and unsafe climbing. If you ever watched the office, you'll remember the episode where Gabe made a video with random uncomfortable scenes and Erin showed during a Halloween party. That is how tha place feels and that is how it "stimulates" you. For reference, i went to the one in Utrecht, not Tilburg.

  • 5Wonderful!

100% recommended. Attended as birthday surprise, had great time! Please consider adding healthy options in the menu after experience. Now it is all fried and with mayo, salad, fresh sandwich or alternative would help.

About Utrecht

Utrecht is a Dutch university city of old canals with sunken wharf cellars, a soaring cathedral tower and museums from music boxes to Miffy.

Utrecht began as a Roman fort and has been a religious and trading centre ever since, and its heart is the Dom Tower, a 112-metre church tower that is the tallest in the Netherlands. The Oudegracht, the old canal, runs through the middle of the city with quays set below street level, and the cellars of the old warehouses along the water are now cafés and restaurants. The university, founded in 1636, fills the streets with students and bicycles.

Top-ranked sights in Utrecht: Dom Tower, De Haar Castle (Kasteel de Haar), Museum Speelklok.
