Treviso lies on the Sile and Botteniga rivers in the Veneto, a short distance north of Venice, and its old centre is still ringed by 16th-century Venetian walls. Canals run between old mills and arcaded streets, and the Pescheria, a fish market on a small island in the Cagnan canal, sits at the heart. The Piazza dei Signori holds the Palazzo dei Trecento, a medieval town hall, and the cathedral has a Renaissance chapel.
The church of San Nicolò has frescoes by Tommaso da Modena, and in the former chapter house of its convent a cardinal is painted wearing spectacles, among the earliest depictions of eyeglasses. The Prosecco hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, a World Heritage landscape, rise to the north. Asolo's hilltop town and Possagno, where the sculptor Canova was born, lie in the foothills of Monte Grappa, and the Sile river park runs to the lagoon.
Red radicchio, long-leaved and bitter-sweet, is the winter signature, grilled or stirred into risotto, and the city lays claim to the invention of tiramisù. Winters are damp and often foggy, which suits the radicchio season from November to March, and summers are warm. Prosecco is poured in every bar.
