Experience the best of Trapani
Trapani is a Sicilian port on a sickle-shaped headland, with salt pans and windmills to the south, the hill town of Erice above and islands offshore.

Trapani occupies a thin sickle of land that juts into the sea on Sicily's western coast, and its old name, Drepanon, means sickle in Greek. The old town is a tight grid of lanes and Baroque churches ending at the Torre di Ligny, a tower on the tip of the headland. At Easter the Procession of the Mysteries carries groups of life-size figures through the streets, a tradition four centuries old.
South of the city the salt pans stretch along the coast, with white mounds of salt and old windmills, and flamingos are often seen in the shallow pools. Above Trapani, Erice stands on a mountain with medieval walls, stone lanes and a Norman castle. Boats leave for the Egadi Islands of Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo, and the Greek temple of Segesta is a short drive inland.
Couscous alla trapanese, with a fish broth, shows the island's North African ties, and the local pesto is made with almonds, tomatoes and basil. Tuna from Favignana and sea salt from the pans appear on many menus. Spring is green with wildflowers, summer is warm and dry, and the sea stays warm into October.
