Experience the best of Taormina
Taormina is a hilltop town on Sicily's east coast, with an ancient Greek theatre facing Mount Etna, a main street of palazzi and sea views over the Ionian.

Taormina clings to the slopes of Monte Tauro, about 200 metres above the Ionian Sea, with Mount Etna smoking to the south-west. Its ancient theatre, begun by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC and later rebuilt by the Romans, still hosts concerts and performances, and from the upper rows Etna and the coast fill the view. The main street, Corso Umberto, runs between two town gates, past churches, palazzi and small shops, to Piazza IX Aprile, a terrace over the sea.
Below the town, the islet of Isola Bella is joined to the beach by a strip of sand and shingle at low tide, and a cable car runs down to the shore. Giardini Naxos, on the bay, stands on the site of the first Greek colony in Sicily. Castelmola, a village on a crag above, has a ruined castle. Etna is about forty kilometres away, and the Alcantara Gorge cuts through black lava inland.
Granita with a warm brioche is the Sicilian breakfast, and arancini, fried rice balls, cannoli, almond pastries and wine from Etna's slopes are all on offer. Almond wine is sold in the shops along Corso Umberto. The town is liveliest from June to September, when the sea is warm.
