Takaka is a small country town where the hills of the Tasman district come down to a wide bay of sand and mudflats. The town grew around dairy farming, and its streets hold craft shops, cafés and places to stay. Golden Bay's sunny climate and quiet pace draw walkers, artists and campers. The only road in crosses Takaka Hill, a winding climb over marble hills from Nelson.
Te Waikoropupū Springs, a set of clear freshwater springs near the town, hold some of the clearest water anywhere, and they are sacred to Māori. Visitors view them from a boardwalk. Wharariki Beach, reached by a walk across dunes, has sea arches and a seal colony. Farewell Spit, a long sand spit to the north-west, is a wildlife reserve for birds.
Golden Bay is farming country, and the cafés and stalls of Takaka lean on local produce and seafood. The weather is sunny and mild, with warm summers and cool winters. December to February are the busiest months, and autumn is quieter and colourful.
