Experience the best of Queenstown
Queenstown, on Lake Wakatipu in New Zealand's South Island, is a mountain town beneath the Remarkables, set among gold-rush hills and vineyards.

Queenstown sits on the shore of Lake Wakatipu, a long, deep lake shaped like a lightning bolt, with the jagged Remarkables mountains rising across the water. It began as a gold-rush camp in the 1860s on the Shotover and Arrow rivers, and the lakefront, with its small streets, preserves a few stone buildings from that time. A gondola climbs Bob's Peak for the view over the lake.
Arrowtown, a restored gold-mining village among poplars and willows, glows with autumn colour, and the Kawarau Gorge was the site of the world's first commercial bungy jump. The steamship TSS Earnslaw crosses the lake, and Glenorchy, at the head of the lake, has scenery used in the Lord of the Rings films. Milford Sound, in Fiordland, is a long day's drive away, and Cardrona and the Remarkables have ski fields.
Central Otago is Pinot Noir country, with vineyards at Gibbston and Bannockburn, and venison, lamb and salmon shape the menus. Skiing runs from June to September, and the poplars of Arrowtown turn gold in April.
