Experience the best of Wellington
Wellington is New Zealand's capital, a compact harbour city of steep hills, a waterfront museum, a cable car and a famously strong wind.

Wellington wraps around a deep harbour at the southern tip of the North Island, with hills rising steeply behind the waterfront and Cook Strait beyond the heads. It is the seat of government, and the Beehive, the executive wing of Parliament, stands among the other parliamentary buildings. Te Papa Tongarewa, the national museum, sits on the waterfront. The wind is a local legend.
A red cable car climbs from Lambton Quay to the Botanic Garden at Kelburn, and the lookout on Mount Victoria gives a view of the whole harbour. Zealandia is a fenced valley sanctuary where native birds have been brought back, and Oriental Bay has a city beach. Ferries cross Cook Strait to Picton, Kāpiti Island lies up the west coast, and the wine villages of the Wairarapa lie beyond the Remutaka hills.
Coffee is taken seriously here, especially along Cuba Street, and craft beer and small restaurants fill the side streets. Green-lipped mussels, crayfish and fresh fish come from the surrounding waters, and a cold southerly can blow in off the strait at any time of year.
