Fiordland National Park fills the south-western corner of the South Island, a mountainous wilderness of glacier-carved fiords, lakes and temperate rainforest listed by UNESCO as part of Te Wāhipounamu. Milford Sound, in Māori Piopiotahi, is a steep-sided fiord where Mitre Peak rises about 1,700 metres straight from the water. It is one of the wettest places on Earth, and in heavy rain temporary waterfalls appear down every wall.
The road from Te Anau to Milford runs through beech forest and the Eglinton Valley, passes the Mirror Lakes and goes through the Homer Tunnel, cut through solid rock. Doubtful Sound, longer and quieter, is reached by boat across Lake Manapouri and by road over the Wilmot Pass. The Milford, Kepler and Routeburn tracks cross the mountains. Seals, bottlenose dolphins and Fiordland crested penguins live on the coast, and the rare takahē, a flightless bird, survives in the mountains.
Southland's cheese rolls, venison, lamb and Bluff oysters are the local foods, with Te Anau as the base for most visits. The weather changes quickly in any season: summer days are long and light, winter is clear and cold, and rain, whenever it falls, feeds the waterfalls.
