Experience the best of Dunedin

Dunedin is a Scottish-founded university city on New Zealand's South Island, beside the Otago Peninsula and its albatrosses, penguins and seals.

Dunedin was founded in 1848 by Scottish settlers, and its name is the Gaelic form of Edinburgh. The Octagon, an eight-sided plaza at the centre, is ringed by St Paul's Cathedral and the town hall and holds a statue of Robert Burns. Victorian and Edwardian buildings of dark stone fill the streets, among them the Flemish-style railway station and the Gothic First Church. The University of Otago, the country's oldest, gives the city a student character.

Baldwin Street, one of the steepest residential streets in the world, rises sharply in the north of the city, and Larnach Castle, a 19th-century mansion with gardens, stands on a hill of the peninsula. The Otago Peninsula stretches north-east along the harbour, with a breeding colony of royal albatrosses at Taiaroa Head and yellow-eyed and little blue penguins, fur seals and sea lions on its beaches. Tunnel Beach, south of the city, has sandstone cliffs and a hand-cut tunnel to the shore, and the Taieri Gorge cuts inland through rocky country.

Southern food leans on seafood and lamb: blue cod, Bluff oysters in their season and roast meat. Summers are mild and long-lit and winters cold and often frosty, with pinot noir from the inland vineyards of Central Otago and coffee in the old warehouses to warm them.
