Experience the best of Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape, is a university town of oak-lined streets and Cape Dutch buildings, at the centre of South Africa's wine country.

Stellenbosch is the second-oldest European settlement in South Africa, founded in 1679 by Simon van der Stel, then governor of the Cape, who named it partly after himself. Its oak-shaded streets are lined with whitewashed Cape Dutch houses, and Dorp Street has some of the best preserved. The university gives the town a youthful air, while the Village Museum has restored houses from different periods.
Mountains stand on every side: Stellenbosch Mountain, the Simonsberg and the Jonkershoek valley, with hiking trails and waterfalls. The Stellenbosch Wine Route, the first in South Africa, links estates making Cabernet, Chenin Blanc and Pinotage, a cross first bred at the university in 1925. Franschhoek, Paarl and Somerset West are close, and Cape Town lies about fifty kilometres west.
A braai, the South African barbecue, with boerewors sausage is the weekend ritual, and farm restaurants on the wine estates serve bobotie, spiced mince baked with an egg topping, Cape Malay curries and milk tart. The grape harvest falls in February and March, summers are hot and dry, winters are wet, and the vineyards glow in autumn colours in April and May.
