Experience the best of Cape Town

Cape Town spreads between Table Mountain and the sea, a striking city of beaches, vineyards, penguins and history near Africa's southwestern tip.

Table Mountain's flat summit looms over everything, reached by cableway or by hiking trails, with Lion's Head and Signal Hill flanking it. Below, the V&A Waterfront bustles around the working harbour, and boats leave from there for Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was held for eighteen years. The colourful houses of Bo-Kaap climb the slopes above the city centre and the Company's Garden.

The Cape Peninsula is a drive of famous views. Chapman's Peak winds above the Atlantic, the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point mark the rugged tip, and African penguins waddle on Boulders Beach near Simon's Town. Camps Bay and Clifton have dazzling beaches, while Muizenberg's surf and the botanical gardens of Kirstenbosch show other sides of the city.

The Cape Winelands of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl lie within an easy drive, known for their gabled Cape Dutch estates. Local food mixes Cape Malay curries and bobotie with braai grills and fresh seafood. Summer, from about November to March, is warm, dry and windy; winter is cooler and wetter, and southern right whales visit the coast from winter into spring.
