Durban is South Africa's warm Indian Ocean port, a city of golden beaches, Zulu and Indian culture, curry and the hills of KwaZulu-Natal.
Durban sits on a natural bay on the Indian Ocean in KwaZulu-Natal, and its port is one of the busiest in Africa. The Golden Mile, a promenade backed by hotels and lined with sand, runs along the beachfront, and the Moses Mabhida Stadium, built for the 2010 World Cup, has a great arch that visitors can climb or ride up. The city has a subtropical climate with warm sea water all year.
Durban has one of the largest Indian communities outside India, descended from labourers brought to the sugar fields from 1860, and the Victoria Street Market sells spices and crafts, near the Juma Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the Southern Hemisphere. Florida Road has cafés and restaurants, and the Botanic Gardens are among the oldest in Africa. The Valley of a Thousand Hills lies inland, the Drakensberg mountains a few hours west, and Zululand to the north.
Bunny chow, a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with spicy curry, was invented in Durban and is the city's signature dish, eaten with the hands. Durban curries, samoosas and fresh seafood show the Indian and coastal influences.
