Pretoria sits in a valley between ridges of the highveld, about an hour's drive north of Johannesburg. The Union Buildings, a sweeping sandstone complex on a hill with formal gardens, is the seat of the presidency and the site of Nelson Mandela's 1994 inauguration. Church Square, with its statue of Paul Kruger, is the historic heart, and the Voortrekker Monument stands on a hilltop, a granite landmark with a museum inside.
In October, thousands of jacaranda trees colour the streets purple, which has earned Pretoria the nickname Jacaranda City. Freedom Park commemorates South Africa's struggle for liberation, and the Rietvlei Nature Reserve on the edge of town has rhinos, zebra and antelope. Nearby, the Cullinan diamond mine, the Magaliesberg hills and the Cradle of Humankind caves, a fossil site, all lie within an hour or so.
South Africans cook over fire: braai barbecues with boerewors sausage, pap maize porridge with tomato relish, biltong, melktert and potjie stews. The highveld has warm, wet summers with afternoon thunderstorms from October to March and sunny, dry winters with cold nights. Autumn and spring are the most pleasant seasons.
