Experience the best of Skukuza

Skukuza is the largest camp in Kruger National Park and the park's administrative centre, set beside the Sabie River in the south of the park, in Mpumalanga. It is named after the Shangaan nickname for James Stevenson-Hamilton, the first warden, who shaped the park from a collection of game reserves into a national park in 1926.

The surrounding country is bushveld of marula trees, thornveld and riverine forest, with elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo and rhinos, the so-called Big Five, as well as giraffes, hippos and hundreds of species of bird. The Sabie River draws wildlife to its banks, and the camp has an airport and a library named after Stevenson-Hamilton.

Days follow the rhythm of game drives at dawn and dusk, with braais at camp in the evening, the sound of hyenas and the call of nightjars. In the dry winter months animals gather at the rivers and the bush thins out, while summer is hot, green and rainy, with migrant birds and young antelope.
