In the old town, restored under the name Heart of Sharjah, coral-stone houses, wind towers and the old fort of Al Hisn line shaded lanes. Close by, the Museum of Islamic Civilization holds manuscripts, ceramics and early scientific instruments, while restored courtyard houses in the arts area host contemporary exhibitions.
The Central Souk, known for its blue tiles and wind towers, sells gold, carpets and antiques, and the Al Majaz Waterfront and Khalid Lagoon draw evening crowds to their fountains and cafés. The Ottoman-style Al Noor Mosque sits at the lagoon's edge, and the canal-side Al Qasba district adds cafés, boat rides and family outings.
Inland, the desert reaches Mleiha, where archaeological sites and a fossil-rich mountain reveal thousands of years of history, and the emirate stretches across to towns on the Gulf of Oman. Sharjah keeps to traditional customs more closely than its neighbours, with modest dress expected and alcohol not served. Late autumn to early spring is the most comfortable season.
