The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, with its white marble domes, floral inlay and vast courtyard, is one of the most beautiful buildings in the region and glows softly after dark. Nearby, Qasr Al Watan opens the grand halls of the presidential palace to visitors, and Qasr Al Hosn, the city's oldest stone building, tells the story of the emirate's beginnings.

Saadiyat Island is the cultural district, home to the Louvre Abu Dhabi beneath its lattice dome and to quiet white-sand beaches. Yas Island brings theme parks, a Formula One circuit and a waterside promenade. The long Corniche follows the city's waterfront with beaches and parks, and kayak routes wind through the mangroves of the eastern lagoon.

Inland, the dunes roll toward the Liwa Oasis on the edge of the Empty Quarter, where sand drives and nights at desert camps are unforgettable. Emirati dishes such as harees, a slow-cooked wheat porridge, and fragrant rice with fish or lamb sit alongside cooking from across the world. Visit between late autumn and spring for warm, sunny days; summers are very hot and humid.
