Jebel Jais, the highest mountain in the United Arab Emirates, rises in jagged ridges above the coast, and a winding road climbs to viewpoints, hiking trails and one of the longest zip lines anywhere. The summit is noticeably cooler than the shore, making it a favourite escape in the warmer months.
Along the coast, long sandy beaches are lined with resorts, and the creek and mangroves near the old town reward kayakers with herons and quiet water. Dhayah Fort, a hilltop fortification above palm groves, the National Museum inside the old ruler's fort, and the abandoned pearling village of Al Jazirah Al Hamra show the emirate's long history.
Inland, red dunes invite desert drives and camel rides, and farms and date groves fill the plain below the mountains. Local food is Emirati and seafood-rich, with grilled hammour and fragrant rice. From late autumn to early spring, beach and mountain days are both comfortable, making it the best time to visit.
