Experience the best of San Fernando

San Fernando is an old river-port town on the northern fringe of Greater Buenos Aires, in the province of Buenos Aires. Its low houses, plazas and riverside clubs look onto the Río de la Plata and onto channels that wind into the Paraná Delta, and the water shapes daily life more than the nearby motorways do.

The delta is the main reason to come: a maze of islands, creeks and wooden houses on stilts, where boats serve as buses and taxis. Neighbouring Tigre has a river port with a fruit and craft market and an art museum in a former clubhouse, and San Isidro, on the river to the south, has a neo-Gothic cathedral and a historic centre above the water.

River life flavours the food: grilled surubí and dorado from the Paraná, asado cooked on the riverbank, and empanadas and mate shared on Sunday afternoons. Boats still carry people and groceries to the island houses, and autumn and spring give the mildest days on the water.
