Ravenna was the capital of the Western Roman Empire from AD 402, then of the Ostrogothic kingdom and later of Byzantine Italy, and eight of its early Christian buildings are on UNESCO's World Heritage list. The Basilica of San Vitale glows with gold mosaics, the tiny Mausoleum of Galla Placidia has a starry blue vault, and Sant'Apollinare Nuovo shows long processions of saints. Two baptisteries and the stone tomb of the Gothic king Theodoric are close by.
Dante died in Ravenna in 1321, and his tomb stands beside the Basilica of San Francesco. Sant'Apollinare in Classe, a tall brick basilica, stands in the countryside on the site of the old Roman port. The pinewoods of the Pineta di Classe run behind the beaches of Marina di Ravenna and Punta Marina, and the Po Delta Park to the north holds lagoons and flamingos.
Romagna cooking centres on piadina, a thin flatbread filled with cheese and greens, cappelletti pasta in broth, tagliatelle with ragù and squacquerone, a soft fresh cheese. Sangiovese is the red wine and Albana the white. The Ravenna Festival fills churches and theatres with music each summer.
