Experience the best of Pescara
Pescara is Abruzzo's largest city, a lively Adriatic resort with a long sandy beach, a river harbour and mountains rising behind the coast.

Pescara spreads along the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo, at the mouth of the river from which it takes its name. A broad beach of fine sand, lined with bathing lidos and a seafront promenade, runs the length of the city, and the Ponte del Mare, a sail-shaped cycle and footbridge, crosses the river mouth to the harbour. The poet Gabriele D'Annunzio was born here, and his birthplace is a museum.
The Museo delle Genti d'Abruzzo covers the folk traditions of the region, and the old quarter beside the river has small bars and fish restaurants. Beyond the city, the hill town of Chieti holds an archaeological museum with the Warrior of Capestrano, and to the south the Costa dei Trabocchi has wooden fishing platforms standing on stilts in the sea. The Gran Sasso and Maiella mountains, with their national parks, rise within an hour or so inland.
Arrosticini, tiny skewers of lamb grilled over a long brazier, are the region's calling card, along with brodetto, a tomato-based fish stew, and spaghetti alla chitarra, cut on a wire frame. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is the red wine, and parrozzo, a domed almond cake coated in dark chocolate, was named by D'Annunzio. Summer is the beach season; spring and early autumn are pleasant and quieter.
