Experience the best of Perugia

Perugia is the hilltop capital of Umbria, a medieval city of steep stairways, an Etruscan arch, a great fountain, and chocolate and jazz festivals.

Perugia climbs a long ridge in central Italy, a city of medieval lanes, stairways and arches. The Fontana Maggiore, a carved marble fountain from the 1270s, stands on Piazza IV Novembre beside the cathedral and the Palazzo dei Priori. Inside the palace, the National Gallery of Umbria holds paintings by Perugino and Fra Angelico. The Etruscan walls, the Etruscan Arch and the Etruscan Well recall earlier days.

The Rocca Paolina, a papal fortress buried under the city, is crossed by escalators, and the old aqueduct is now a pedestrian path. The University of Perugia was founded in 1308. Assisi lies a short way to the east, Lake Trasimeno to the west, the ceramic town of Deruta to the south, and the vineyards of Torgiano, with a wine museum, are close by.

Perugia has a long chocolate-making tradition, and the Eurochocolate festival fills the streets in October, while Umbria Jazz takes over in July. The local flatbread, torta al testo, is split and filled with greens or sausage, and pasta with truffles, lentils and Sagrantino wine mark the region. The local bread is baked without salt.
