The Scrovegni Chapel, frescoed by Giotto around 1305, is Padua's best-known treasure, and it belongs to a group of fourteenth-century fresco cycles that UNESCO has listed together. The Basilica of Saint Anthony, with its domes and the saint's tomb, draws pilgrims from across the world. The Prato della Valle, an oval square ringed by a canal and a circle of statues, is among the largest in Europe.
The university, founded in 1222, counted Galileo among its teachers from 1592 to 1610, and the Palazzo Bo still holds an anatomical theatre of 1594. The Orto Botanico, laid out in 1545, is among the oldest botanical gardens in the world. Markets fill Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta, Caffè Pedrocchi has served since 1831, and Venice is about thirty-five kilometres east by train.
Risotto, bigoli pasta with duck or anchovy sauce and the roasted Padovana hen suit the local table, and student bars pour the spritz that spread from the Veneto. Prosecco comes from the hills to the north. The Euganean Hills to the south hold thermal spas at Abano and Montegrotto and Petrarch's last home at Arquà.
