Experience the best of Nikšić

Nikšić lies inland on a high plain in the Dinaric mountains, the second-largest city in Montenegro and its main industrial centre. A Roman settlement named Anagastum stood here, and the ruins of the fortress of Onogošt, rebuilt by the Ottomans, stand on a rise above the town. Montenegrin forces took the town in 1877, and it grew into a modern city of broad avenues and a green park on Trebjesa hill.

Lakes such as Krupac and Slano lie close to the town, and the plain is ringed by mountains. To the north, the highlands of Durmitor and the Piva canyon, with its deep lake, offer rafting, hiking and skiing. The Ostrog Monastery, a white shrine set into a cliff face and a major pilgrimage site, lies a short way to the south-east.

The town's long-established brewery has made it known across Montenegro, and its food is mountain food: lamb cooked under an iron lid with embers, kajmak, a rich cream cheese, and cured ham. Winters are cold and snowy at this height, and summers are warm and dry.
