Budva's old town sits on a rocky peninsula, enclosed by stone walls with a citadel on the seaward point. Narrow lanes lead between small churches and squares, and the settlement is more than 2,500 years old, with Venetian rulers shaping its present look from the fifteenth century. A 1979 earthquake damaged much of it, and it was carefully rebuilt. Beaches such as Mogren are reached by a path along the sea.
The Budva Riviera runs along the coast to the south, with the fortified islet of Sveti Stefan joined to the land by a causeway. The Bay of Kotor, with its steep mountains and walled town, lies not far to the north-west, and Lovćen National Park and the old royal capital of Cetinje rise inland. Skadar Lake, the largest lake in the Balkans, is within reach.
Grilled fish, black risotto and mussels from the bay appear on seafront menus, with smoked ham and cheese from the mountain villages, and Vranac, the dark red wine of Montenegro. Rakija is the local spirit. Summers are hot, dry and busy with beachgoers, while winters are mild and quiet.
