Podgorica stands on a plain where the Morača and Ribnica rivers meet, ringed by mountains, and it is the political and commercial capital of Montenegro. Much of the city was rebuilt after the Second World War, and it was called Titograd from 1946 to 1992. The old Ottoman quarter, Stara Varoš, keeps a clock tower and a small mosque, the Millennium Bridge crosses the Morača, and the large Orthodox Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ is one of the city's best-known buildings.
Just north of the centre, the ruins of the Roman city of Doclea include a forum and a basilica. Skadar Lake National Park, a huge freshwater lake shared with Albania, with wetlands and many birds, starts a short drive south, with the village of Virpazar on its shore. The old royal capital Cetinje is about 35 kilometres west, the Bay of Kotor is within a couple of hours, and mountains rise to the north.
Njeguši smoked ham and cheese, kačamak, a hearty dish of cornmeal, potatoes and cheese, and lamb roasted under an iron lid are typical Montenegrin dishes, and carp from Skadar and the red Vranac wine, made in vineyards near the city, go with them. Summers here are among the hottest of any European capital.
