Maranello is a town of about seventeen thousand people in the foothills south of Modena in Emilia-Romagna, and the home of the Ferrari car company, which has had its factory here since the 1940s. The Ferrari Museum displays racing cars and road cars, and the Fiorano test circuit lies at the edge of town.

The surrounding Motor Valley is also home to other makers of fast cars and motorbikes, and in Modena the Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari stands beside the house where the founder was born, under a curved yellow roof. Modena's cathedral and Piazza Grande are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Apennine foothills around Fiorano Modenese and Sassuolo hold castles and ceramic-tile factories.

Food is as famous as the cars: Parmigiano-Reggiano, traditional balsamic vinegar aged for years in wooden barrels, tortellini in broth, and sparkling red Lambrusco. Spilamberto, a short drive away, has a museum of balsamic vinegar. Fog drifts over the Po plain in winter, and the hills around are green with vines in summer.
