Livorno became a major port when the Medici rulers of Florence built it up in the late sixteenth century, and they invited merchants of every faith and country, so the city mixes Greek, Jewish, Dutch and English heritage. The Fortezza Vecchia guards the old harbour, and the Monument of the Four Moors stands near the port. The Venezia Nuova quarter has canals crossed by small bridges.
The Terrazza Mascagni is a long seafront promenade paved in a black-and-white chequerboard, and the covered Central Market is a large hall of food stalls. Livorno is a gateway to Tuscany, with Pisa about twenty kilometres north and Florence, Lucca and Siena farther inland. To the south, the coast road runs past rocky coves and the wine villages of the Etruscan Coast.
Cacciucco, a spicy fish stew with five kinds of fish, one for each C of its name, is the dish to know, and torta di ceci, a baked chickpea flatbread, is eaten in a bread roll as a street snack. Ponce, coffee with rum, is the local drink. The painter Amedeo Modigliani was born here.
