Experience the best of Kuala Terengganu

Kuala Terengganu stands at the mouth of the Terengganu River on the South China Sea, the capital of Terengganu state. Its mosques are among its best sights: the Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque, often called the Floating Mosque, stands on a platform over a lagoon at the Ibai river mouth, and the Crystal Mosque, made of glass and steel, rises in the Islamic Heritage Park on Wan Man Island in the Terengganu River.

The old Chinatown on Jalan Bandar has narrow shophouses, temples and cafés, and the Pasar Payang market sells batik, songket woven with gold thread, brassware and dried fish. The Terengganu State Museum holds a large collection of traditional crafts and boats. Duyong Island, in the river mouth, is known for its wooden boatbuilders. Offshore islands such as Redang and Kapas are reached by boat from the jetties of the town and the coast nearby, and the hill of Bukit Puteri overlooks the old centre.

Keropok lekor, nasi dagang and laksam, a dish of rolled rice noodles in a creamy fish gravy, are the local foods. The heaviest rain comes with the monsoon at the turn of the year, and the sea is at its calmest in the middle months.
