Penang island sits off the north-west coast of peninsular Malaysia, joined to the mainland by two bridges. George Town, founded by the British in 1786, is a World Heritage city of shophouses, mansions and temples built by Chinese, Indian, Malay and European communities. The Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion is painted a deep blue, the Khoo Kongsi clan house has an ornate hall, and the Clan Jetties are wooden stilt villages over the water.
Kek Lok Si, a hillside temple complex with a tall pagoda, overlooks Air Itam, and a funicular railway climbs Penang Hill for cool air and views. Street art murals, some playful, cover walls in the old town. On the north coast, Batu Ferringhi has beaches and a night market, and Penang National Park offers a jungle walk to quiet coves. Fort Cornwallis recalls the colonial years.
Penang is regarded as Malaysia's food capital. Char kway teow, wok-fried flat noodles, assam laksa, a sour fish noodle soup, nasi kandar, rice with curries, and cendol, an iced dessert with coconut milk and palm sugar, are sold at hawker stalls. The weather is hot and humid all year, and festivals such as Chinese New Year and Thaipusam fill the temples.
