Petaling Jaya adjoins Kuala Lumpur on its western side, in the Klang Valley. It was begun in 1952 on former rubber estate land as a planned new town for the capital, with the first houses built around what is still called the Old Town, and became a city in its own right in 2006. Neighbourhoods are known by numbered sections and names such as SS2, with wide roads, schools, lakes and shopping centres. Its position gives quick rail and highway links to downtown Kuala Lumpur.
The older shop-lots of the Old Town hold kopitiams, coffee shops that serve kaya toast and soft-boiled eggs, and the night markets set up stalls of grilled meat and fruit. Batu Caves, the Petronas Towers and the museums of Kuala Lumpur are a train or highway ride away, and Shah Alam, with its blue-domed state mosque, adjoins the city to the west.
Food is the city's calling card, with Malay nasi lemak, Chinese noodles and bak kut teh, and Indian roti canai and banana-leaf rice all served within a few streets. Teh tarik, tea pulled between two cups into a froth, is the drink of the mamak stalls. Afternoon thunderstorms break up the hot, humid weather all year.
