Langkawi lies in the Andaman Sea off the coast of Kedah, close to the Thai border, with one large main island ringed by around a hundred islets. Granite and limestone hills rise sharply from rice fields and rubber plantations, and the main town, Kuah, is the ferry port. An eagle statue at Dataran Lang recalls the bird that, by a common explanation, gives the island its name.
The Langkawi Cable Car climbs Mount Mat Cincang to the Sky Bridge, a curved footbridge high above the forest. The Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, part of a UNESCO Global Geopark, has mangrove channels among limestone cliffs where eagles and monkeys can be seen from boats. Pantai Cenang is the main beach, Telaga Tujuh has a series of pools and waterfalls, and the marine park of Pulau Payar offers coral reefs.
Seafood grilled over coals, laksa, rice with curries and coconut, and fruit like mango and durian fill the island's tables, as in the rest of Kedah, known as the rice bowl of Malaysia. The legend of Mahsuri, a woman said to have laid a curse on the island, is retold at her tomb. Rain is lightest from December to March.
