Johor Bahru is the capital of Johor, on the Johor Strait opposite Singapore, to which it is joined by a causeway, with a second crossing farther west. The city grew in the 19th century under Sultan Abu Bakar, whose Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque, in a mix of Moorish and Victorian styles, looks over the strait from a hill. The Istana Besar, the sultan's palace, stands close by and includes a museum.

The Old Chinese Temple, built in the 1870s by the five main Chinese communities, stands in the city centre, and the centre also has night markets and the Danga Bay waterfront. West of the city, Iskandar Puteri has a large theme park and new waterfront districts. Tanjung Piai, a mangrove national park at the southernmost point of mainland Asia, and the beaches of Desaru on the east coast are longer drives.

Laksa Johor, with spaghetti-like noodles in a fish and coconut gravy, is the city's signature, and mee rebus, noodles in a sweet potato gravy, and otak-otak, grilled fish paste, are other local specialities. Heat and humidity last all year, wetter from November to January, and sweet iced coffee is the usual remedy.
