Ischia is the largest island in the Bay of Naples, a green volcanic cone whose peak, Monte Epomeo, rises to nearly 800 metres. Hot springs bubble up across the island, feeding thermal parks and spa hotels, and the main towns are Ischia Porto, Ischia Ponte, Forio and Lacco Ameno. The Aragonese Castle, set on a rocky islet joined to the shore by a causeway, stands on the site of ancient fortifications and was rebuilt in the fifteenth century.
Forio's white Church of the Soccorso stands on a headland over the sea, Lacco Ameno has the mushroom-shaped Fungo rock on its beach, and Sant'Angelo is a fishing village on a small peninsula largely closed to cars. Greek settlers founded Pithekoussai on Ischia in the eighth century BC, one of the earliest Greek colonies in the west, and a museum at Lacco Ameno holds a cup from a tomb with a verse inscribed on it. Procida lies close by, and Capri across the bay.
Ischian rabbit, cooked in a terracotta pot with tomato, garlic, white wine and herbs, is the island's celebrated dish, and local white wines such as Biancolella and Forastera grow on the volcanic slopes. Seafood pasta and Neapolitan pastries complete the table. Spring to autumn is the season for the gardens and thermal pools.
