Tauranga lies on a large sheltered harbour on the Bay of Plenty, on the north-east coast of New Zealand's North Island, with a major port across the water. The Strand, the downtown waterfront, has cafés and parks, and The Elms, a mission station founded in 1838, is a preserved colonial house and garden.
Mount Maunganui, known as Mauao, a 232-metre volcanic cone at the end of a sandy peninsula, can be climbed in under an hour and gives views along the coast; below it are a long surf beach and hot saltwater pools. To the south-east lie the beaches of Papamoa and Te Puke, centre of the kiwifruit district, and the geothermal lakes of Rotorua are a drive inland. Dolphins often swim in the bay.
Kiwifruit, avocados and citrus from the orchards, green-lipped mussels, snapper, craft beer and good coffee fill the menus of the harbour cafés. The climate is sunny and mild, with summer from December to February and gentle winters.
