Experience the best of Curitiba

Curitiba, the capital of Paraná in southern Brazil, is a cool, green plateau city known for its parks, its bus system and its Polish and Ukrainian roots.

Curitiba stands on a plateau about 900 metres above sea level, and its planning, with parks, pedestrian streets and an express bus system from the 1970s, is known across Brazil. The Largo da Ordem old quarter has colonial churches and a Sunday fair, Rua XV de Novembro is a pedestrian street through the centre, and the Jardim Botânico has a long glasshouse with formal gardens in front.

The Oscar Niemeyer Museum, nicknamed the Eye for its eye-shaped gallery raised on a pillar, shows art and design, and the Ópera de Arame is a steel-and-glass theatre in a former quarry. Memorials to Polish, Ukrainian, German and Italian settlers dot the parks. Beyond the city, the Serra do Mar mountains fall to the Atlantic coast, and a scenic railway runs through the forest to Morretes.

Morretes is the home of barreado, a beef stew cooked for hours in a clay pot and eaten with manioc flour and bananas. In Curitiba, churrasco, dumplings from the Polish and Ukrainian communities and mate tea sit side by side, and pine nuts from the Paraná pine are roasted in winter. The climate is cool and rainy all year, with frost on some winter mornings.
