Cluj-Napoca is the main city of Transylvania, in north-west Romania, built along the Someșul Mic river at the foot of wooded hills. The main square, Piața Unirii, is dominated by the Gothic Church of St Michael and the statue of King Matthias Corvinus, who was born in the city in 1443. Baroque and Habsburg-era buildings around it house cafés, and the Orthodox cathedral stands on a nearby square.
The Alexandru Borza Botanical Garden has glasshouses and a Japanese garden, and Cetățuia hill gives views over the red roofs. Babeș-Bolyai University makes Cluj a student city with a lively café and festival scene, including the Transylvania International Film Festival in June. Salina Turda, a salt mine opened as an underground park, and the Turda Gorge lie to the south-east, the Apuseni Mountains to the west, and the baroque Bánffy Castle at Bonțida to the east.
Transylvanian cooking brings sarmale, cabbage rolls, and mămăligă, Romanian polenta, to the table, along with Cluj-style cabbage layered with minced meat and rice, and papanași, fried doughnuts with sour cream and jam. Winters are cold and snowy and summers warm, and Hungarian influence shows in kürtőskalács, chimney cake.
