Experience the best of Timișoara

Timișoara is the largest city of the Banat, in western Romania near the Serbian and Hungarian borders, and the Habsburg era left it with wide squares and pastel baroque and Secession buildings. Union Square, with its baroque cathedral and the Serbian Orthodox cathedral, is the centre of the old town, while Victory Square is lined with the opera house and the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, with its coloured tiled roof.

The city has the Bega canal and its tree-lined banks, many parks and a rose garden, which earned it the name City of Flowers. Huniade Castle, a medieval fortress rebuilt over the years, houses the Banat Museum. Timișoara was the starting point of the December 1989 revolution, and a memorial records that history.

Banat food blends Romanian, Hungarian, German and Serbian traditions: sarmale, cabbage rolls, grilled mici sausages, and paprika-spiced stews. The vineyards of Recaș lie a short drive to the east. Summer is hot and the terraces fill with people, while winter brings frost and a little snow.
